Starting and running community groups

Many groups start ‘organically’ – like-minded people working together on a project. However, for group longevity and impact, it can be really useful to work out what you’re about and how you will achieve it together.

Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay can help through activities such as facilitating group sessions and promoting your group to attract volunteers.

  • Community Net’s Community Resource Kit provides heaps of ideas on getting started as a group, organisational structures, governance, involving volunteers, and lots more. DoC’s Community Project Guidelines and Predator Free’s Group Administration guidance will get your group and project off to a great start.
  • Te Puni Kōkiri provide guidance for governing Māori organisations. This information is focused on being a member of a formal board (say, of a Trust), however it gives some ideas on including tikanga principles alongside governance principles.
  • Find more interested people to join your group as volunteers.
  • If you’re engaging volunteers, then you need to know about health and safety, including legal requirements.
