Biodiversity is enhanced at community planting day

f9THp1Qw.jpeg
The sun came out in support of the Te Huka Waiohinganga (Esk) River Care Planting with tamariki from the local Eskdale School.

The whole school of over 300 came along in waves through the day, digging in and getting muddy, and planting over 2,000 native plants.
The new river care group teamed up on the day with Eskdale School, Trees that Count, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and HB Enviroschools to plant the natives. There was also fantastic support from parents and grandparents. The bus to transport children was sponsored by the HBRC Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF).

This planting along the Esk River was made possible by partnerships with Hastings District Council, Hawkes Bay Regional Council, Department of Conservation, Trees that Count, Petane Marae and the 1 Billion Trees programme. Generous local support also made it possible. Plants were grown by Plant Hawke’s Bay.

Te Huka Waiohinganga (Esk) River Care Group was formed after kōrero within the community. Their vision is to partner with the community to improve water quality and biodiversity in Te Huka Waiohinganga (Esk) catchment. While there are pockets of remnant native bush in the valley, there is little remaining.  The groups future plans include developing a nursery and providing further opportunities for community education and awareness.

This planting follows on from a community planting day in heavy rain but a great turnout of over 60 people. The next planting day is August 8  and is open to the public. Head along to their website www.eskrivercare.org or Facebook page to find out more.
